8 Things to Do In An Emergency
1. Stop- Evaluate the situation (fire, weather, earthquake, etc.)- Listen for any cries of help.
2. Reassure and calm students.
3. Take your emergency plan book, red/green cards and disaster can.
4. Evacuate the classroom to the back fence by the basketball courts.
5. Calmly and quickly lead students to the designated fire drill area.
6. Quickly and accurately take attendance
7. Report to Secretary in the Parent Pick-Up area the status of the class.
8. If Teacher is alone with the students (Secretary or Aide are not present), the teacher should take the cordless phone, the folder with emergency contact information, your disaster can, follow the evacuation procedure, call 911. Tell the 911 Operator you are the teacher of the Blake School and that you are alone with the Students. Wait with the children for help to arrive. Do not go into any building. Do not leave the students for any reason.

Take out Parent Sign Out Roster
Documents to sign out student:
Parent/Guardian must show Picture ID, confirm on Emergency Card
Parent/Guardian must sign out each student
Secretary needs to record time, date and initial each student signed out
Signal for Evacuation using the air horn (located next to fax machine)
Assess situation on campus
If communication is intact – make all necessary phone calls (911)
Set up Parent Pick Up Station at the Front School gate
Get visual information (Red/Green cards)
Determine need for search and rescue
Assess Structural Damage/Dangers
Turn off all appliances
Turn off water/propane valves
**If the secretary is not present, these responsibilities will go to the Teacher/Principal.

Evacuate the classroom
Put in North Window the Green card (all clear) or Red Card (student inside)
Take the Disaster Can with you to the Fire Drill Area
Take attendance accurately
Keep the Students calm
Assess any injuries and administer first aid as necessary
Send a help (when it is safe) to notify the Secretary of your situation
Wait with the students until help arrives or all students are signed out to Parent/Guardian
Notify Secretary of any structural damages or hazards.
All School Employees Are Disaster Service Workers
California Government Code Section 3100 specifies that, after a disaster, public employees can be declared disaster service workers and assigned to such activities as deemed necessary by their supervisors. The term “public employee” applies to all persons employed by the state, or any county, city, city and county, or public school district. Blake School District employees my be required to remain with student for long periods of time during a disaster. District employees are encouraged to have family emergency plans, which allow for their remaining on the job during a disaster.

Responding to the Media
Only the designated spokesperson for the District shall comment to the Media and respond to questions or concerns. In the Blake School District, this spokesperson shall be Dawn Carver (Teacher/Principal) or Gary Bray (Superintendent)
